I usually consider myself pretty informed and up-to-date and opinionated about political issues…but I keep hearing about Obama’s health-care plan in the news and the opposition to it, etc…
And I still have no idea what exactly the plan is. Is it a major difference from our current system? Or is it just tweaking things? How?
Please summarize in a few paragraphs or less…what exactly is his plan (and also, possibly, what are opposing plans contrasted to it).
Thanks!

even obama doesnt know.
He was sked last week at a town hall meeting, “President obama, can you tell me I will be able 100% to keep my private insurance”
Obama says, “To be honest I have not read the bill, I couldnt tell you if that is in there or not. I do know that the government can provide yu insurance cheaper than they can”
then at the end of the town hall meeting he sates, “ANd you WILL be able to keep your private insurance!!!”
Now HOW can he make that statement 20 minutes after he just said he didnt know?
this is my whole problem with this, obama thinks we have short term memory and wont remember 5 minutes later.
One of the blue dog democrats stood up and said, “I have been a congressman for 27 years. And this is the first president in my time here that says, “I want this” and doesnt lay out a plan for us to go by to build a bill. Even Pres Bush would lay out a summary structure for us to work off of. Pres obama has laid nothing out for us. He didnt in the stimulus either and this has me worried. Pres obama goes on tour and tells people this and that and has no idea what is in the bill because he wants no part of helping craft it. I am afraid we ill spend months on this and obama will say no to it. then we will have to spend months again and all because Pres Obama will NOT lay out any guidelines for us. During the campaign obama said he had this health bill on paper and ready to go. never seen it”
If he has one, he is not showing it to us, the only bill available is the house bill and he says things that are not in it, are in it, so I guess he has a different one, it’s very confusing ,but that may be his goal, keep us in the dark, until it is made law, then we have NO choice**********
You sound like me. We do not know. The opponents have been preemptive in opposition. It has been labeled “Obama-care”, prejudged and quoted as to expensive as the Congress tries to put together a plan. The Congress is drafting several bills, not the President; ideas and numbers are fluid. The goal is to offer a health plan commensurate to the members of Congress. It is literally half baked in the process. The foolishness of demonstrations and not allowing the process to work in order to debate a final version is the very thing that is wrong with being an informed voter in America. What needs to occur is a final version, informing the public, across the board debate and then a vote.
I would emphasize, informing the public on the facts, how much, how do we pay for it, who benefits and for how long. This needs to come from the President and the leadership from the members of Congress. Then, if we do not like it or them, vote them out and let us get it right.
. Not accusing you of anything, but this sounds suspiciously like homework and I don’t do homework any more.
But YOU can find out a lot if you Google “HR 3200.” That’s the number of the House’s health care bill (House Resolution 3200). The Senate has several versions, so there is no one bill. The final result will be hammered out in a House-Senate Joint Conference Committee.
The basis is: revenue-neutral; no exclusions for pre-existing conditions; lower costs through forcing insurance companies to be more efficient and to compete for cost-conscious patients who will have their CHOICE of plans; cheap-enough ‘basic’ insurance to allow many uninsured people to finally get some coverage, etc.
When 47 cents of every premium’s dollar going NOT going into an insurance company’s patient’s care, because of stock profits, CEO pay, etc etc, any good, responsible legislator should feel compelled to follow the Constitution’s proviso to “promote the general welfare.”
That’s the PRO side; here’s the CON side: blue-haired Beck-inspired weepers worried about death panels, euthanasia, socialism, communism, Nazification, etc etc and other lobbyists’ lies about what is not and never will be in the bill.
.
That’s exactly the point.
These town hall screamers are shouting down the representatives who have come to explain the health care plan to them.
They’re screaming and whining about a plan they don’t even know what’s in it.
The full plan hasn’t even been released yet, so who knows what’s in it?
It was the plan of Congress and the President to go out and explain the basics of the plan to constituents across the country.
But they had no idea that these right wingers would go out and do what Rush Limbaugh instructed them to do by shouting down their representatives.
First of all, understand that there is no single Health Care Reform bill. There are about 4 or 5 bills that are currently with the Senate Finance Committee. Six senators are currently working on negotiating a single bill.
The “Gang of Six” are:
Sen. Max Baucus (D, Montana)
Sen. Kent Conrad (D, North Dakota)
Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D, New Mexico)
Sen. Charles Grassley (R, Iowa)
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R, Maine)
Sen. Michael Enzi (R, Wyoming)
This is why nobody can answer the question and why nobody has read “The Bill”…right now, there is no bill.
It’s absolutely not something that can be summarized in a few short paragraphs, especially since you don’t seem to have a firm grasp of the present system. Plus, it is still being changed by Congress. After a bill passes both the Senate and the House, well, if you don’t know what happens to bills at that point, you’ve got some major research to do on how bills become law.
