CLARIFICATION: I do not support Obamcare. I support single payer. Any time now we’ll find out what the Supreme Court thinks about the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The only reason they’re even involved is because Republicans said that Obamacare is “unconstitutional” and challenged it in lower courts. Funny how the Supreme Court isn’t talking about the death panels that would pull the plug on grandma though, isn’t it? Remember people like Sarah Palin and Chuck Grassley lying their asses off to scare people shitless, especially seniors, about all that? Way back in 1989, the Heritage Foundation, a highly conservative right wing group, wrote a brief called “Assuring Affordable Health Care for All Americans” which included an individual mandate (sound familiar?) to counter the single-payer European style system the Democrats were working on. The Heritage Plan was introduced as legislation in 1993, sponsored by about 20 Republicans including Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and Bob Dole, who was Senate Minority Leader at the time. About 10 years later, Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, began building a proposal based on the individual mandate, and got the support of over eighty members of the Senate. In 2006, he unveiled the Healthy Americans Act. But as soon as a black man in the White House with a Muslim sounding name introduced it, it became as un-American as socialist apple pie. So now we have Obamacare, a Republican …

Right on OF! Keep up the good work! Definately because of race. I remember that in ’93. Now they don’t like it. Idiots.
Right on OF. I remember way back then. I thought it was pretty good idea. Now the Rep. Don’t like it. Makes no sense. What a bunch of dweebs and racists.
I know. My comments often come across as sadistic and vulgar, but that really is the intent. It’s my way of expressing my opinion on not the people themselves, but what their religion does to their minds. I express what I feel is going on inside of their sub-conscience. The enslavement to the fanatical devotion to this imaginary sky friend, and their angry response to those of us who refuse to except their views. But that is just their realization of just how stupid they are, and they know it.

Wait and see what happens with SCOTUS and Obamacare. If only the mandate goes there will still be exchanges where people can shop prices (like Travelocity). And boy will the Republicans have egg on their faces because insurance companies will be stuck with doing the right thing without a captive base to pay for it! Still not as good as single payer though – if you have firends overseas like I do, just ask them – they’ll tell you how good it is.
I don’t understand your question.
I agree. I should have listed preventing monopolies as a function of the federal government as well. I think many of these problems though, including the problems with insurance companies, can be solved by allowing more competition between these companies. Let insurance companies in Texas sell insurance to Michiganders. Let people choose the best deal. I’m heading to bed though, Old Fart. Maybe you can talk me into supporting a single-payer healthcare system another day.
“Return power to the people at the local level” Yeah that worked quite well in getting women the right to vote and in doing away with the Jim Crow south.
Ah, typical that your type cites the 10th amendment, yet ignores the supremacy clause that states the federal constitution and federal law has supremacy over state constitutions and state law. Where exacty do you find these comments that you cut and paste?
How is Government retirement? I need to know. Is Social Security alone adequate?
Don’t oversell yourself on the merits of an unbridled free market. Do little research about the days of the robber barons. The answer is a balance between free markets and government control. For instance, Las Vegas casinos make tons of money, but they are prohibited from making more than 20%. If we held insurance companies to that same kind of regulation we would have a much better system. You can’t let capitalism run wild – the rich will ALWAYS take advantage of the poor and middle class.
Thank’s for the help. You could have deleted me as spam, but you helped instead. & in my book that makes you a wonderful human being. Got to say, love your video’s ! Just the right blend of wisdom, social awareness, & political accuracy make your video’s recommended for anyone who care’s for humanity & the Right wing’s political injustices. Just keep being you & we’ll keep veiwing..Once again, thank you.
The entire purpose of Madison’s Constitution is to rein in Federal Government Tyranny. Return power to the people at the local level.
The Tenth Amendment is similar to the Articles of Confederation: Each state retains its sovereignty freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated to the United States. This means James Madison was a Tea Bagger So every state can try there own unique approach as Governor Romney did @ Taxchussets however the Central authority is excluded from this preivlige
Sure, in response to population growth we’d need more people in government to cover the same functions for more people, but I don’t follow your logic when it comes to expanding the functions of government because of population growth. Schools, healthcare, and retirement planning are things that everyone needs. That means there is demand for them. They would be much cheaper if we stopped regulating and providing them through government. Also states having their own laws is an important check.
And BTW, I’m not making excuses for “big government.” I was a hippie out protesting “the man” so I’m no government lover by any means! But when you’ve been around awhile you tend to be more realistic and analytical about things. The bad part about something big is it tends to move slow and there’s really nothing you can do about it. Just look at elephants… or IBM.
Since we are ‘the united states” not 50 little countries, we need to be able to depend on uniform/good roads, schools, healthcare, laws, etc. anywhere we decide to travel, work, or live. What people who long for the “good old days: forget is back then there were only a few million people. What you propose might work fine for a small European sized country with that kind of population, but we’ve had 600% population growth in the past 200 years. “Tiny government” just can’t cut the mustard.
I really appreciate the dialogue here, Old Fart. I really strongly disagree with you on the “need for uniformity” in the US though. In my opinion we need the federal government for just a few things: Military and Defense, Coining of Money, Enforcing Contracts, and Protecting Civil Liberties. My understanding is that our government performed these functions before the income tax was instituted in 1913. With information always at our fingertips today, I think a truly free society is within reach.
As I told Oldfart… When I say free market solutions I am talking about allowing people to purchase insurance across state lines. That would help to lower costs by competition. Right now we do not have free market health care nor before the health care reform.
