Congress questions a panel of religious leaders from various faith affiliations (Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Jewish, etc.) regarding the current Health Care HHS mandate. The panel, though diverse in belief, unite together in one voice against the current threat to religious liberty in our country. To me, it is a beautiful witness the unity achievable between faiths against a common threat to one of our fundamental rights; freedom. SUMMARY: Under the current wording of the bill, almost all employers (including Catholic employers and religious organizations), will be forced to offer their employees health coverage that includes contraception, sterilization, and abortion inducing drugs. This is a direct contradiction to the teachings of the Catholic Church, and should be opposed on this principle alone; religious liberty. This is not about women’s rights, nor is it a political manuever to oppose Obama. In fact, the Catholic Church is in favor of more laws to help the poor, even at the expense of the rich. (This goes for affordable health care coverage for all). The issue is not the bill itself, but instead, what is couched within the bill, notwithstanding the so-called “accommodation”, which redefines what a religious organization is and what it is not. Under this current definition, any organization that serves those of differing faiths (Catholic hospitals, charities, universities, soup kitchens, etc) cannot be considered a religious organization, and thus must offer …
