Today, Zane Benefits, Inc. published new information on the medical insurance premium tax credit. Zane Benefits, which provides comprehensive and flexible alternatives to traditional employer sponsored health benefits, is the leader in defined contribution and health reimbursement arrangements.

According to Zane Benefits website, starting in 2014, individuals and families can take a new medical premium tax credit to help them afford health insurance coverage purchased through a state-based Health Insurance Marketplace. On May 18, 2012, the Treasury Department and the IRS issued final regulations which provide guidance for individuals who enroll in qualified health plans through Exchanges and claim the premium tax credit, and for Exchanges that make qualified health plans available to individuals and employers.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Household income must be between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL).

Covered individuals must be enrolled in a qualified health plan through a Health Insurance Marketplace.

Covered individuals must be legally present in the United States and not incarcerated.

Covered individuals must not be eligible for other qualifying coverage, such as Medicare, Medicaid, or affordable employer-sponsored insurance.

How much is the tax credit?

According to Zane Benefits website, the credit amount is generally equal to the difference between the premium for the benchmark plan and the taxpayers expected contribution.

The expected contribution is a specified percentage of the taxpayers household income. The percentage increases as income increases, from 2% of income for families at 100% of the FPL to 9.5% of income for families at 400% of FPL. The benchmark plan is the second-lowest-cost plan that would cover the family at the silver level of coverage.

Are there any special rules?

According to Zane Benefits website, yes. The credit is advanceable (i.e. advance payments are made directly to the insurance company on the familys behalf). The advance payments are then reconciled against the amount of the familys actual premium tax credit, as calculated on the familys federal income tax return.

Results posted from the longest-running study on the affects of Aspartame reveal stunning negative results of the artificial sweetener, giving new life to the health community’s efforts to cut Aspartame from diets.

The results, which were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, come with bad news for potential dieters who were using Aspartame-based sodas to enjoy their favorite flavors while cutting out the calories. The study carries heavy weight compared to smaller studies thanks to its sheer size, an estimated 2,278,396 people-years worth of participant data has been gathered placing this study at the forefront of the Aspartame examination studies.

Vascular Health Sciences Medical Advisor Dr. Derrick DeSilva, M.D. acknowledged the significance of the new study, noting that he has long warned his patients about the danger of Aspartame.

“I have urged those under my care to stay away from Aspartame, said Dr. DeSilva. Ive instead pointed to healthier alternatives to diet soda, or better yet giving up on soda altogether, in order to protect them from the dangers of the sugar-substitute.”

Dr. DeSilva, M.D. is a practicing Internist and Senior Attending Staff at Raritan Bay Medical Center and is on the teaching faculty at JFK Medical Center in New Jersey.

“The risks are not worth the few benefits of enjoying a can of diet cola compared to excluding cola completely from one’s diet and changing their lifestyle to reflect a new beverage of choice, he continued. I’ll say it again, stay away from Aspartame.”

Aspartame has come under scrutiny for the potential increase of risks for certain negative effects on the human body, and the latest of and largest of studies only offers more condemnation. The consumption of just a single can of diet soda increases the risk of leukemia by 42 percent for both men and women, according to the study. It also raised the risk of multiple myeloma by 102 percent in men and risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma by 31 percent in men. Its unclear why men are mostly affected, displaying further risk than women. Diet soda was used in the study as it is where most Americans consume Aspartame, totaling 86 percent of the 5,250 tons consumed annually.

Animal trials have started for testing exposure at the fetal stage, and early results have shown similar results, in addition to increased breast cancer development in female rats.
