TED, the nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, announces today TEDYouth, the first-ever TED event for young people. TEDYouth will take place on Saturday, November 19, 2011, from 1-5pm, at the Times Center in Manhattan and will coincide with more than 100 self-organized TEDxYouthDay events occurring in 50 countries over a 48-hour period.

The popularity of the inaugural TEDxYouthDay in 2010 sparked the idea for TEDYouth. Tied to Universal Childrens Day, TEDxYouthDay events take place November 19-20, 2011 and are planned by TEDx organizers worldwide, with the idea to inspire and engage youth.

The theme for TEDYouth is “Play, Learn, Build, and Share. More than 300 New York City students, grades 6-12, were selected through an application process to participate in the one-day event. In addition to the live events at the Times Center, TEDYouth will be available via live stream to TEDx organizers and TEDx events across the globe. More than 60 youth reporters from around the world have been selected to live report news, reflections, quotes and impressions of TEDYouth and TEDxYouthDay via Twitter, Facebook, and other online media platforms.

“TED has always fostered a diverse community of innovative and creative thinkers, and as the next generation of leaders, youth are critical to the conversation. We are thrilled to introduce TEDYouth and engage young people in the dialogue that is shaping the world and the way we think,” said Kelly Stoetzel, TEDYouth Curator.

Over the course of two 90-minute sessions, each of the 20 passionate TEDYouth speakers will inspire creativity and share mind-shifting stories. From artists to authors, explorers to entrepreneurs, physicists to poets, TEDYouth speakers will challenge, provoke and engage their physical and virtual audience in the ways that every student deserves to learn.

Select video content from TEDYouth will be archived for TED-ED, a collection of themed educational videos designed to catalyze learning around the globe.
