The key is to make it as easy and convenient as possible for patients to pay their bills, whether its an insurance co-pay or the entire balance, said Chhoda. Creating a self-pay program with an EMR eliminates the financial burden of outsourcing collections to an outside agency.
An EMR now provides the tools for therapists to collect client funds online with debit or credit cards through a patient portal. Funds can also be deducted from checking or savings accounts straigthaway. The system can be accessed by patients 24/7, clients can pay all or part of their bill, and they have the option of establishing one-time or recurring payments.
Chhoda added that an EMR also provides the means to remind patients of their outstanding debt via phone, fax, mail and email, along with text and voice messaging. Sliding fee scales can be instituted, discounts offered, and the option of applying for a medical financing card should be offered.
Approximately 50 percent of all bills go unrecovered and Chhoda said that whenever possible, clinicians should collect any amount thats owed at the time services are provided. Unemployment rates are still at an all-time high and practitioners will continue to see an increased number of self-pay patients as clients lose their health insurance when their jobs are terminated.
Perhaps the most challenging part of collecting payments is an overall shift in patient attitudes toward healthcare and Chhoda said its critical for therapists to understand that change. Todays clients rely on health insurance for their every medical need. When that coverage disappears, they become self-pay patients, even if they dont have the funds to pay their bill. Clients will always choose paying the mortgage over their physical therapist.
Chhoda said clinicians have choices for self-pay patients and an EMR provides the means to initiate programs that allow clients to pay their charges over time and do so with a variety of methods. His new information about EMRs allows patients to obtain the treatments they need, while providing practitioners with new and innovative methods to collect their fees.
Chhodas office can be reached by phone at 201-535-4475. For more information, visit the website at http://www.emrnews.com.

After listening to the needs of cat owners from across the nation, Pets Best Insurance, the very company that was founded by US pet health insurance pioneer, Dr. Jack Stephens, has launched a low cost feline-only illness cat insurance plan to help cat owners provide the best veterinary care to their pets.
Pets Best Insurance has offered pet insurance plans to both cats and dogs since 2005, but this feline-only illness plan is the first of its kind, in that it only covers costly feline illnesseswhereas the standard plans cover both illness and accidents.
While pet insurance is certainly increasing in popularity, were not seeing cat owners insure their pets at the same rate as dog owners, Dr. Stephens said. Weve been told the reason is because our standard plan coverage was almost too comprehensive for indoor-only cats. Cat owners primary worry seems to be cat-specific illnessesand so the Feline Illness plan was born.
Dr. Stephens said premium cost is another thing Pets Best Insurance took into consideration, and that the average Feline Illness plan starts at just a few dollars a month, depending on the deductible selected.
We wanted to provide an affordable introductory pet insurance for cat owners to help cover higher vet costs associated with the more-expensive illnesses that are entirely out of the cat owners control, he said.
Some of the most expensive feline illnesses covered include, cancer, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, chronic renal failure and pancreatitis, just to name a few.
Dr. Stephens said cat insurance is of particular importance because unlike dogs, cats tend to instinctually hide illness and injury from their owners.
Before you know it, your cat could be very sick, he said. If you have cat insurance you can take them into the vet early on without worrying about the vet bill.
The Feline Illness plan covers over 20 feline illnesses and reimburses cat owners up to a $ 4,000 annual limit per year, and up to a $ 10,000 lifetime limit. While the plan does not cover all feline illnesses, disease or accidents, Pets Best Insurance thinks the coverage is extremely comprehensive and will help even more pet owners protect their beloved pets.
We still recommend our standard plans for cats that include coverage for illness and accidents. However, if a feline owner on a tighter budget wants a plan that covers a good majority of the severe or chronic cat diseases; our Feline Illness plan will be the answer.
Dr. Stephens said owners of indoor-only cats sometimes think their cats are safer. But illnesses like cancer, kidney disease and diabetes are rampant in cats and treatment for these conditions can be thousands of dollars.
Cat illness coverage seemed like an obvious necessity and it was something that was lacking in the industry until now.
Cat owners can get a free quote at http://www.petsbest.com and purchase online or over the phone. While pet insurance premiums are based on age, location and breed, the feline illness only plans start as low as $ 4 a month.
As of August 7, 2012 the Feline Illness plan is available in the following states: ID, MT, WY, UT, AZ, NV, CA, NE, TX, IA, MO, AR, TN, MS, AL, SC, WI, MI, OH, WV, PA, DE, RI, ND, SD and VT

Benefit Brainstorm, a company specializing in low-cost concierge health benefits for corporations, announces the launch of freshbenies to revolutionize health benefits for American families. Did you know health insurance costs are skyrocketing, leaving gaps like never beforeand, theres no end in sight for American families? Of course you did!
Reid Rasmussen, ex-Canadian, health insurance industry veteran and reform expert has this to say: In the last 3 years, Americans haven’t seen a pay raise, yet their healthcare costs are up about 30% with huge increases in out-of-pocket expenses. Add to that, 32 million uninsured Americans will clog doctor offices as health reform comes into full swing. So, we’re paying more, yet having a tougher time getting care – and navigating “the system” won’t get any easier! Most Americans don’t even know there are innovative solutions out there. Weve been serving the corporate customer with these solutions for years and saw the need to help busy families, too.
Heidi Rasmussen, 27-year retail and consumer marketing veteran said Women are master consumers in all other areas of life except health insurance even though they make 80% of the benefits buying decisions. They also deal with the fallout of healthcare issues staying home from work to take a sick kid to the doctor, shuttling to dentist and optometrist visits, dealing with their insurance plan, medical bills, etc. Why arent women better health insurance consumers? Because the industry is so complex and hasnt provided the necessary tools to help the actual end consumer. We started freshbenies to do just that.
So, how does freshbenies fill the gaps and help with skyrocketing healthcare and insurance costs?
freshbenies bundles non-insurance benefits together into one simple card by leveraging the volume of big corporations. Thats why its low-cost!
According to the American Medical Association, about 70% of all doctors visits result in information or a consultation that could have easily been handled via phone or internet. Use the 24/7/365 Call a Doctor service AND get a prescription, if needed. Its a fact – kids get sick on Friday at 4pm now, busy women can just call their 24/7/365 Dr. BFF to get needed advice (maybe even a prescription) and have their kids feeling better fast without that wasted time in the waiting room!
freshbenies provides a Personal Advisor to help members navigate medical care, paperwork, insurancethe system. They can help find a specialist, the best hospital for a procedure, answer questions about an insurance issue, etc. They also review, summarize and even work to negotiate discounts on medical bills.
The National Association of Dental Plans estimates about 47% of Americans dont have dental insurance, and the Vision Council estimates that 83% of employers dont provide vision benefits. Because of this, freshbenies gives busy women dental discounts and vision discounts on everything from brand-name eyewear, LASIK, and contacts to braces, cleanings, whitening and dental/vision exams all at substantially discounted rates.
These days, many families have a prescription drug thats expensive or not covered by insurance. freshbenies members save an average of 38% simply by flashing their freshbenies card at over 60,000 participating locations.

Once again, Costa Rica continues to amaze global leaders as the central bank on Tuesday raised its 2012 economic growth forecast for the second year in a row. The increase, 4.8 percent from the previous estimate 3.8 percent, is mainly due to strong activity and progress in the manufacturing and franchise sectors. Rodrigo Bolanos, president of the central bank, stated “This is due to growth in demand in both the external and internal markets”.
Furthermore, the bank predicts the inflation rate to rise to approximately 5 percent through the year 2013. This is due to a decision the central bank made in 2007 when they decided to float the col

Starting this fall, kids in Rockland, Westchester and Bergen counties will have a chance to get fit and healthy by participating in a unique pilot program sponsored by Bounce! Trampoline Sports, well known New York area sports nutritionist Dr. Michael Wald, and the Rockland Farm Alliance.
The pilot program will involve 25 kids ages 12 15 who care about their own fitness and want to develop a program that will help other kids in the future. The program will run for eight weeks and involve exciting trampoline based activities and games, workshops on creating fun and healthy snacks, and feedback sessions on what the kids like and want to adjust going forward.
“We are very excited about our new Get Fit & Feel Great Program. We developed the idea when several parents said, ‘Bounce! is so much fun, my kids don’t know its exercise!’ We’re proud that it fits in with Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign and we believe this program could change the way these kids think about themselves for a lifetime,” stated Danny Fried, co-owner of Bounce! located in Valley Cottage.
Head Fitness Trainer at Bounce! Trampoline Sports and former acrobat performer Victor Byrne, will lead each class, developing new activities and programs based on the feedback from the participants. Byrne, who oversees all classes and gymnastics training at Bounce!, is also director of the VBAD Stars where he trains some of New York State’s best young diving champions at the world class facilities at SUNY Purchase in Westchester.
Teens will meet one on one with Dr. Michael Wald, Director of Nutritional Services at Integrated Medicine of Mount Kisco,to talk about their goals and weigh in, and then the focus will shift to having fun and finding activities that kids enjoy as well as how to make healthier food choices. “It is so important for kids to know that what they take into their bodies effects the way they move, think and interact throughout the day. Regardless of whether they play competitive sports or just want to throw a ball around with friends, we want to change their mindset about living a healthy lifestyle,” states Dr. Wald who has been helping kids eat right and stay healthy for over 20 years.
The Rockland Farm Alliance, based at Cropsey Farm in New City New York, will provide organic and locally grown vegetables for the kids to sample so they can try new foods grown right in the county and see the difference it can make when something is picked fresh and grown without harmful chemicals. A trip to the Farm is also planned during the program to talk about how caring for the earth affects the foods we eat.
The class will meet three times a week for one hour beginning mid September and run for eight weeks. The children in the program will set their own goals and monitor their progress and provide feedback on what is working for them and what they might recommend for other kids for future programs. At the end of the eight weeks they will be able to evaluate their own progress and see how well they did. The fee for the pilot program is only $ 195 and registration will begin August 1st. A kickoff event is planned for September; check the Bounce website (http://www.bounceonit.com) for details and information.
Bounce! Trampoline Sports is a 25,000 square foot facility offering all ages the opportunity to play sports, have fun and get fit on enormous courts of interconnected trampolines. They offer aerobics and acrobat classes, Bounce! Boot Camp, pick up dodgeball games and league play, slam dunk basketball, and gymnastics and tumbling training. The second Bounce! facility will open in Syosset, New York in the fall of 2012. For more details visit their website at http://www.bounceonit.com. Bounce! Trampoline Sports is located at 612 Corporate Way in Valley Cottage off Route 303, just two miles north of the Palisades Center Mall. For questions call 845-268-4000.

The following veterinarians have been named as the six finalists in the My Vets the Best Contest after being nominated by their respective clients for providing exceptional veterinary care and for going above and beyond for pets and their owners:
Dr. Holly Brophy, Bel Aire Pet Clinic, Mt. Zion, Illinois
Dr. Richard Chu, Pets Unlimited, San Francisco, California
Dr. Kathy Joseph, Vandalia Animal Clinic, Vandalia, Ohio
Dr. Tony Poutous, Pet Care Veterinary Hospital, Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dr. Luminita Sarbu, Veterinary Oncology Center, Renton, Washington
In the contest, pet owners nominate their veterinarians and explain why they think they are the best through a form on the Pets Best Insurance Facebook page. Each quarter, an internal panel at the pet insurance agency selects six finalists from all received nominations. The six veterinarians and their client-submitted stories are then posted to Facebook for one month of public voting. Stories are currently available on the Pets Best Insurance Facebook page at https://forms.petsbest.com/vote and online voting is now open.
Each quarter, the pet owner with the story receiving the most votes will receive a $ 200 cash prize and the winning veterinarian will receive $ 1,000 for the treatment of animals in need, or for those pet owners who cannot afford the care their pet needs. A single grand prize winner will also be selected by Pets Best Insurance at the end of the year. The annual grand prize winner receives airfare, hotel accommodations and registration for two to the 2013 Western Veterinary Conferencea leading continuing education conference for veterinarians. The 2012 My Vets the Best contest will recognize a total of four winning pet owners and their veterinarians throughout the year.
The first quarter winner of the 2012 My Vets the Best contest, Dr. Tom Greek, of Greek and Associates Veterinary Hospital in Yorba Linda, CA, was able to provide care to a female tortoise named Roxy with the $ 1,000 he was awarded. Dr. Greek was nominated by client Liddy Kammer and won the online vote.
Roxy was diagnosed with a three-inch urinary bladder stone which required surgery involving cutting a window through the bottom of her shell to access the bladder. Unfortunately, Roxys owner wasnt able to provide the surgery to Roxy and ended up relinquishing the tortoise to Greek and Associates Veterinary Hospital.
Through the prize money from Pets Best Insurance, GAVH performed the life-saving cystotomy to remove the bladder stone, Dr. Greek, said. [Roxy] shows that even a tortoise can go through tough times and with a little help from others, can persevere.
