California state economic development director Kish Rajan and deputy director Louis Stewart today joined state and local elected officials in Riverside to announce the designation of four new Innovation Hubs (i-Hub), further expanding the largest network of state sponsored innovation clusters in the U.S. This announcement comes just days after Governor Brown signed legislation AB 250 to formally recognize the i-Hub program in statute and establish the Innovation Accelerator Account.

Todays announcement of four new i-Hubs further cements California as the world leader in innovation, said GO-Biz director Kish Rajan. These new initiatives bring together key resources to support manufacturing, aerospace, defense, energy, healthcare, agribusiness, and more. This allows regions all over the state to better capitalize on new technologies and support homegrown start-up businesses that create the bulk of Californias new jobs.

Hypersign releases new emergency alert system to work with its new IPG Gateway. This new software has been specifically designed with the K-12 educational system in mind.

Hypersign software allows you to take over full control of the display system with a push of a button. In the event of inclement weather, a fire or an intruder, school administration can display appropriate emergency alerts to every Hypersign digital signage display, classroom computer, teachers tablet, and paging system in 500 milliseconds. The alerts can be deactivated at any time and the displays will go back to their preprogrammed content. The Hypersign Emergency Alert software can also be used by the school administration to take over the displays for campus wide announcements or special news.

The IPG Gateway system interfaces using a standard cat5 patch cord with a single RJ45 connector and fan out cable to connect to alarm triggers within a facility. Each IPG-T unit can service up to 4 physical triggers.

When an event happens, the appropriate school faculty will issue an alert that will then travel to the IPG Gateway. Once it reaches the gateway it will be transmitted through the school’s network to the connected devices. The alert will display visual instructions along with audible messages to the overhead paging system. By being able to get this information out quickly Hypersign can potentially save lives in an emergency situation.

The key is to make it as easy and convenient as possible for patients to pay their bills, whether its an insurance co-pay or the entire balance, said Chhoda. Creating a self-pay program with an EMR eliminates the financial burden of outsourcing collections to an outside agency.

An EMR now provides the tools for therapists to collect client funds online with debit or credit cards through a patient portal. Funds can also be deducted from checking or savings accounts straigthaway. The system can be accessed by patients 24/7, clients can pay all or part of their bill, and they have the option of establishing one-time or recurring payments.

Chhoda added that an EMR also provides the means to remind patients of their outstanding debt via phone, fax, mail and email, along with text and voice messaging. Sliding fee scales can be instituted, discounts offered, and the option of applying for a medical financing card should be offered.

Approximately 50 percent of all bills go unrecovered and Chhoda said that whenever possible, clinicians should collect any amount thats owed at the time services are provided. Unemployment rates are still at an all-time high and practitioners will continue to see an increased number of self-pay patients as clients lose their health insurance when their jobs are terminated.

Perhaps the most challenging part of collecting payments is an overall shift in patient attitudes toward healthcare and Chhoda said its critical for therapists to understand that change. Todays clients rely on health insurance for their every medical need. When that coverage disappears, they become self-pay patients, even if they dont have the funds to pay their bill. Clients will always choose paying the mortgage over their physical therapist.

Chhoda said clinicians have choices for self-pay patients and an EMR provides the means to initiate programs that allow clients to pay their charges over time and do so with a variety of methods. His new information about EMRs allows patients to obtain the treatments they need, while providing practitioners with new and innovative methods to collect their fees.
