The following information comes from the following websites: & Medicare was created as part of the Social Security Act that was signed into law in the latter part of the 1960s. This social services was designed to assist seniors in getting affordable health care. As you may or may not be aware, before Medicare as signed into law, less than 2/3 of all seniors lacked any medical health coverage. This left those individuals with enormous out of pocket expenses. Now, seniors who have worked for 5 quarters and paid into social security taxes will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A when they turn 65 years old. You do not have to be 65 per se to get enrolled. There are exceptions for the following types of conditions. If you are suffering from ALS, also known as Lou Gherigs disease, than you can be eligible for Medicare. You can also be eligible for Medicare if you suffer from End Stage Renal Faliure which requires regular dialysis. Finally, any and all individuals who are suffering form any affirmity which has lead to enrollment into Social Security Disability Insurance can be eligible for enrollment into Medicare. Medicare takes care of your basic hospital expenses and some of your Medical Insurance for certain programs. However, this is a far cry of something close to a comprehensive health coverage option.
